In many ways, contemporary designs reflect the popular styles of the time, meaning contemporary styles are constantly changing. They borrow from various styles and designs, including art deco, futurism, and deconstructivism. The furniture for this type of porch features curves with contrasting color palettes focusing on black and white. Contemporary porches often have decorative pieces that highlight the decor, such as outdoor settings or potted plants.

2. Craftsman

Simplicity is the key to the craftsman porch design. Instead of relying on mass-produced homes and porches, the craftsman style focuses on individuality, local natural materials, hand-crafted construction, and simplicity. A trademark of the craftsman house is wide porches, low-pitched roofs, and exposed beams. There are four main styles of craftsman homes: prairie style, mission style, four-square style, and bungalow style. Each style uses a variation of the porch designs mentioned.

3. Deck

The deck is often a feature of the backyard. However, it’s also starting to become a hugely popular front porch design. The small coastal front deck gives the front porch a quaint feel while making the most of a small space. The front deck can create an open space where you can add a swing or patio furniture. A small deck with roof extensions provides more than enough seating without obstructing the entry. Most front decks include a cover to protect against bad weather.

An enclosed porch turns a small space into an elegant, spacious, welcoming, and stylish area. It works with limited space as an entry providing covering from lousy weather. With slightly more space, it can include a seating area and a decorative rug. An enclosed porch opens up the area with a stylish design and uniqueness.

Farmhouses and their porches aren’t limited to one style. They can combine a rustic and timeless feel with contemporary, modern, or craftsman styles. Many farmhouses opt for a craftsman style with added modern appeal. More than any other style, simplicity is the main theme of the farmhouse style. It’s ideal for a small space and entry.

Nowadays the front door isn’t just an entry into the house. The front porch is seen as the appetizer, with the front door leading the way to the main course. It’s a big part of your porch decor that can give a glimpse into your personality.

A great way to spruce up a small porch is with decorative pieces and fake plants. It won’t break the bank or clutter the doorway. During the holiday season, front-door decorations and ornaments are commonplace. Welcome mats are the simplest way to turn an ordinary small space into an inviting front porch.

Low-cost styling is ideal for a small space. It doesn’t require millions of dollars to pull off the perfect porch. All it takes is a few items to transform the small porch into an inviting and stunning area. Add a coffee table with some seating to make the front porch the coolest hangout spot in the house. If that’s not feasible, a throw blanket and cushions can spruce up the area with minimal flair. Other options include a small coffee table, potted plants, faux flowers, and other decor items.

Scandinavian designs heavily influence modern architecture, focusing on a simple layout with practical furniture. The modern style first appeared in the late 1800s, reinventing itself with each decade. Unlike contemporary, modern styles utilizes functional decor over decorative pieces. It’s perfect for a small porch since the colors are neutral with solid lines, adapting to the latest trends.

The porch swing could be the missing piece that ties your front porch together. The best part is a porch swing won’t break the bank. It’s the perfect do-it-yourself project. A simple and basic porch swing requires a few 2x4s and some paint. Then there are the creative porch swings for smaller spaces that are easier to build and will cost even less.

For example, hammock swings are easy to make, inexpensive, and require little space. A pallet swing is another affordable and creative front porch swing idea. If you feel game, add a potted plant or two. It will help the outdoor space look that much bigger.

10. Rustic

Rustic is another approach that focuses on simplicity and affordability. Potted plants and a simple throw rug can easily give any front porch a rustic feel. Reusing furniture is a staple of the rustic look. Head to your local flea market and pick up some old-timey outdoor furniture that will tie the porch together.

A repurposed coffee table with some repainted chairs will cost nothing but look like a million bucks. An old bench makes for a perfect porch swing, or an old rocking chair will fit perfectly on the porch. A rustic birdcage and windchimes will bring the porch together, as will layered rugs on the porch floor. The options are almost unlimited.

Throughout the year, seasonal decor can easily turn your front door and porch into a festive site for all to admire. It won’t even take a lot to spruce the area up. Paint the front door black in the fall and winter to let Halloween decorations pop. That classic Halloween orange stands out against the black background. The same goes for Christmas wreaths, ornaments, and other decor. For the spring and summer months, paint the door with a warm color to highlight the lanterns and potted plants. Easter wreaths pop with bright colors and make the best door decoration. Each season has a different wreath that makes for great decor.

Wicker and wood seating furniture is ideal for any front porch. These items bring a warm, nostalgic, and welcoming feel. A rocking chair with a natural finish contrasts with a wicker chair featuring a bright pillow. Even in a small space, a tiny seating area can spruce up the front porch with elegance and charm. Additionally, a wicker pair of chairs with wicker cushions, blankets, and a wicker basket with flowers will make your front porch the talk of the neighborhood. Anyone approaching the house will be impressed by what they see.

Exposed tiles and brick are one of the easiest ways to open up a small porch and make it appear bigger. This type of style goes perfectly with rustic decor and wicker furniture. In addition, paint the railings white and add a light fixture by stringing light bulbs around the beams to give the illusion of more open space. A sweet throw rug with stacked potted plants in the corner will add charm to the front porch.

Timber front porches allow the homeowner to adapt various types, including modern, craftsman, and contemporary. With timber front porches, the ideas are limitless. Depending on space and price, each style has several options, including sunrooms, wraparound porches, screened-in porches, verandas, and open porches.

A small timber porch goes excellent with rustic decor, wicker furniture, or a DIY swing that used to be a bench. Potted plants, throw blankets, and pillows can make it an inviting porch. At the same time, a timber front porch goes nicely with minimal furniture and decor. It’s the ideal porch for someone looking to save while highlighting their strengths.

Types of Patio Chairs

best patio chairs

Keep in mind that not all chairs fit perfectly into one of these categories. But the information below will still help build the vocabulary needed to outfit your patio exactly the way you want it.

Adirondack

Even if you don’t know Adirondack chairs by name, you’re sure to recognize the distinctive shape. Adirondack chairs are low-seated with tall, sloped backs. Most are made of plastic or wood.

This style of patio chair is most often seen around fire pits, near pools, and as general garden decor.

Club

While the term “club chair” is fairly outdated, it’s the best way to describe many chairs available today. These are comfy, oversized armchairs designed for outdoor lounging and conversing!

Club-style chairs may feature traditional patio cushions on the seat and back. Or they can be fully upholstered (just like the armchairs inside your home).

Dining

Many patio chairs are designed for use with a dining table. These chairs resemble those inside your dining room. But they are made of outdoor-friendly materials like plastic, metal, wicker, or treated hardwood.

Patio dining chairs are frequently sold in sets—with or without a matching table. However, they can also be used individually for additional seating or when patio space is tight.

Lounge

Sometimes called outdoor chaises, patio lounge chairs are one of the most comfortable options out there. While this style is most often associated with the poolside, lounge chairs can be used on literally any type of patio.

In reality, patio lounge chairs come in an extremely wide variety of shapes and materials. Some are upholstered. Others are made of solid wood, metal, or plastic.

The key design feature all lounge chairs have in common is an elongated seat that can accommodate the user’s outstretched legs.

Rocking

Rocking chairs aren’t just for nurseries. In fact, rocking patio chairs are more common than you might realize.

Keep in mind that rocking chairs come in many shapes and styles. It’s even possible to overlook the fact that a chair rocks if you’re not specifically checking for such features.

Although rocking chairs don’t serve any particular purpose, many people find them to be more relaxing than entirely stationary chairs. Rocking chairs can mimic the calming motion of a swing without the need for extensive hardware or time-consuming installation.

Swinging

While not everyone’s cup of tea, swinging patio chairs are immensely popular with some outdoor design trends.

There are several types of swinging chairs available. Most can be categorized by whether they include a support system or must be hung from a separate structure (like a pergola or overhanging roof).

Buyer’s Guide

Patio decor tables and chairs
keep_things_simple/Instagram

Material

Selecting a material for your new patio chair is important for several reasons.

If you’ve chosen a chair marketed for outdoor use, there’s little need to worry about whether the material will hold up to the elements. However, even “outdoor-safe” materials vary in terms of durability.

Material can play a role in the chair’s overall comfort. This is more so the case for fabric and cushions than for weight-bearing materials like metal and wood.

Last but not least, the material your patio furniture is made of will impact its appearance. Some materials are better suited to certain aesthetics than others. Keep your design plans in mind when shopping for patio chairs.

Style

As far as appearance is concerned, the style of your chosen patio chair is very important.

Being able to identify the most common styles of patio chairs can make shopping for your own outdoor space that much easier.

Function

Yes, all patio chairs are designed for the same purpose—sitting. But that’s not necessarily the whole story.

For example, outdoor dining chairs are built differently than those intended for lounging. And trying to use one type of chair for an unintended purpose can be uncomfortable and frustrating.

Before narrowing down your favorite patio chairs, make a list (mental or physical) of the activities you’d like to do in your outdoor living space. Select a chair that accommodates as many of those functions as possible!

Accessories

Most patio chairs are sold individually or in sets. However, some are bundled with additional furniture, e.g., matching ottomans, tables, etc.

Even if your chosen patio chair doesn’t come with accessories, it’s worth researching what matching items (if any) are available.

For example, you might decide you’d like to invest in an ottoman to go with your new chair. You’ll be best off purchasing a chair that has a matching ottoman available.

Care

Some materials will withstand the elements better than others. Similarly, some materials need more maintenance throughout their lifespans than others.

Some questions to ask yourself when shopping for outdoor furniture include:

  • Are you willing to cover your patio chair when it’s not in use? Or do you want outdoor furniture that you can leave exposed almost year-round?
  • Do you have the time and energy to keep upholstered cushions clean? Or would a chair that can be sprayed or wiped clean be a better fit for your lifestyle?
  • Are you looking for a patio chair that will dry immediately after it rains?
  • Are you willing to refinish or treat your patio furniture to keep it looking its best? Or are you in the market for maintenance-free decor?

Take your local climate (and the general location of your patio) into consideration. Even materials that are safe to keep outdoors may be more prone to rusting or fading in some areas.

1. Polywood Presidential Rocking Chair

presidential lemon rocking chair

Check Price

Style: Rocking

Material: Plastic

Upholstery: None

If you’re looking for patio seating that combines a classic aesthetic with modern features, this chair is a great place to start.

Don’t let the plastic construction fool you. This chair – made of recycled milk jugs – boasts greater durability than many “luxury” counterparts. The plastic frame is moisture-, fade-, rust-, and stain-resistant.

The sheer simplicity of this patio chair also makes it extremely versatile. Tuck a single chair into the corner of your porch or balcony. Or purchase a matching set for multiple seating options. This chair can also be paired with matching side tables for a complete patio furniture setup.

Despite the great things this patio chair has to offer, it falls short in terms of comfort.

The seat is a bit too short for many people and the back is very straight. So, if you plan to add this chair to your collection, be sure to invest in a set of cushions as well.

2. Beacon Park Brown Wicker Lounge Chair

beacon park wicker patio lounge

Check Price

Style: Rocking

Material: Steel and resin

Upholstery: Removable Olefin cushions

It’s fairly easy to tell a person’s design priorities by the type of seating they choose. If you find yourself gravitating toward particularly cozy pieces, this wicker lounge chair will definitely catch your eye.

This patio chair is marketed toward fans of the farmhouse aesthetic, and it would look right at home in such a space. But there’s also plenty of reason to include this lounge chair in a modern-, contemporary-, or even Victorian-inspired space!

As is the case with most Hampton Bay furniture, this patio chair is just one part of a matching collection. Coordinating items include tables, ottomans, dining chairs, and more.

For the average person, this chair will probably feel oversized. This could be a benefit or a drawback depending on what you’re looking for in your new patio seating.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the assembly process is very hit-or-miss. While there’s a good chance you’ll have no trouble putting this chair together, some units ship with warped or misaligned parts.

3. Walker Edison Wood Chevron Outdoor Patio Set

outdoor wood patio furniture

Check Price

Style: Dining

Material: Acacia wood

Upholstery: Removable polyester cushion

What’s better than one stylish patio chair? If you thought the answer was anything but “two stylish patio chairs,” you’ve given us too much credit in terms of originality!

All bad jokes aside, these patio chairs contain a ton of potential just waiting to be tapped. While they’re labeled as dining chairs, there’s no shortage of functions these chairs could serve.

Of course, the solid acacia wood construction is beautiful. Just keep in mind that it needs more maintenance than synthetic materials. Walker Edison recommends applying teak oil every two to three months.

These chairs aren’t the peak of quality but are a worthwhile investment for the price. For most, the assembly process is the worst part of owning these chairs.

4. Flamaker 3 Pieces Patio Furniture Set

flamaker three piece patio setting

Check Price

Style: Rocking

Material: Steel and resin

Upholstery: Removable polyester cushions

There are many times when a single patio chair is all you need. But investing in a multi-piece set can help take the guesswork out of home decorating. This patio set includes two chairs and a matching accent table.

The metal frame is durable and well-crafted. It also includes a subtle touch of resin rattan. But this latter detail is easy to miss if you don’t know it’s there.

Even if a side table wasn’t on your list of must-haves, it’s a convenient addition to any seating area.

Note that this particular style of rocking chair isn’t ideal for use at a dining table or for a similar purpose. The only way to prevent rocking is to place a shim on either side of the base.

Affordability is definitely something this furniture set has going for it. But it lacks the durability, comfort, and ease of assembly of higher-end options.

5. Devoko 3 Piece Rattan Wicker Chair Set

wicker patio furniture blue cushions

Check Price

Style: Club

Material: Steel and resin

Upholstery: Removable polyester cushions

This patio set is another great way to fill an outdoor space without spending a fortune on furniture. It includes two chairs plus a side table.

These chairs combine a basic profile with the texture of rattan-inspired resin. But the streamlined look overall may not suit all decor styles.

The inclusion of a matching side table makes this set ideal for stints of sitting with a cocktail or cup of coffee. If you plan to spend hours lounging, we recommend upgrading the cushions.

At 330 pounds, these chairs boast a higher weight capacity than many others on the market. Investing in furniture with generous weight capacities is always a good idea. If you’re looking for a reliable furniture set that will fit on a small patio or balcony, this is it.

Be prepared to spend an hour or two assembling this set. Having the right tools on hand (versus using the ones included) will make assembly much easier!

Final Thoughts

It’s rare to find two patios that look exactly alike. So, it’s only natural that patio furniture would follow a similar rule. Though narrowing down a patio chair that will work for all outdoor spaces is near impossible, the Polywood R100AR Presidential Rocking Chair is the closest we’ve found to date!

This deceptively simple patio chair offers plenty of style and versatility at an accessible price point. You can feel good knowing that the chair is made of recycled plastic milk jugs. And, while the lack of upholstery may seem like a drawback at first, it gives you the opportunity to customize your new patio furniture with cushions of your own.

How To Choose a Patio Dining Set

Balcony patio with dining table and chairs

Material

The main distinction between most indoor and outdoor furniture is the material used.

When choosing a set of patio furniture, you can’t just think about which materials look best. You also need to consider how they will hold up to your area’s climate and most extreme weather.

Popular materials to look out for include:

  • Plastic
  • Wicker
  • Cast metal
  • Glass
  • Teak

Ensuring your patio table and chairs are built to withstand Mother Nature isn’t enough. Take a close look at accessories like seat cushions, tablecloths, and throw pillows. These items must all be made of outdoor-safe textiles. Anything not designed for outdoor use will just fade, degrade, or otherwise fall apart!

Size

Not only can a dining set that is too small or too large be impractical. It can also throw off the entire look and feel of your patio design as a whole.

Before setting your sights on a dining set, take the time to measure the available space on your deck or patio. Be sure to account for add-ons like chairs, and leave plenty of room for people to move around the table.

Height is also a key factor in selecting the perfect patio dining set. For example, do you need a table that can accommodate young ones? Or are you more interested in one that is tall enough to keep Fido from helping himself to your BBQ fare?

Style

The ideal patio dining set offers both form and function. Don’t ignore the overall vibe of your outdoor space when shopping for furniture.

While most patio furniture is fairly neutral, you still want to find ways to tie the pieces into your existing decor. Look around the space for common colors, materials, and themes you can incorporate within your new dining set.

If you’re designing a patio from scratch, coordinating your dining set with the rest of the space should be relatively easy.

Seating Capacity

At a minimum, your new patio dining table should seat every person within your household. Frequent entertainers will want to select a dining set with an even greater seating capacity.

Of course, a high-capacity dining table isn’t practical 24/7. If you intend to host large gatherings from time to time, consider investing in a patio dining set that expands to accommodate extra guests.

Storage Needs

If you live somewhere with harsh winters or other factors that make it difficult to use your patio year-round, you’ll want to think about how and where your patio furniture will be stored during the off-season.

In many cases, storing outdoor furniture is as simple as throwing a cover over the top of it. Some patio dining sets include fitted covers. Others require you to find and purchase a compatible cover separately.

If you want or need to place your patio furniture indoors for part of the year, a folding set might be ideal. This will save tons of space when storing your dining set in a garage, basement, or garden shed.

Built-In Shade

No matter how you feel about the sun, spending too much time outside isn’t good for anyone! Selecting a dining set that includes or is compatible with a protective patio umbrella is a great way to keep yourself and your guests safe and comfortable while dining outside.

1. Northridge Rectangular 8 Person 83'' Long Dining Set with Cushions

modern wicker outdoor dining set

Check Price

  • Seating capacity: 8
  • Materials: Aluminum and resin
  • Umbrella hole: Yes
  • Upholstery: Removable cushions

For large households and those who love to entertain, being able to seat a crowd is a must. This Northridge patio dining set offers enough space for up to eight people. (Plus, plenty of elbow room to spare.)

The wicker-style table and chairs will look right at home in both casual and formal settings. You can dress the dining set up for special occasions and holidays, or embrace a more relaxed aesthetic for everyday use.

One of the highlights of this outdoor patio set is the inclusion of Sunbrella chair cushions. Each cushion features a removable cover – it’s easy to swap out or wash the covers as needed – available in several different colors.

For the price point, it would be nice if this table could be extended to fit different party sizes. As it is, however, this dining set is ideal for family meals and neighborhood get-togethers!

2. Amlie 28'' Square Glass Metal Table With Rattan Edging and 4 Rattan Stack Chairs

simple glass table outdoor dinning set

Check Price

  • Seating capacity: 4
  • Materials: Metal and glass
  • Umbrella hole: No
  • Upholstery: None

If you’re short on space, the last thing you want is to sacrifice your entire patio for oversized furniture. This Wade Logan outdoor dining set is a great alternative to bulkier tables and chairs on the market.

With seating for four and a modern aesthetic, this dining set is designed for indoor and outdoor use. Enjoy your backyard while working from home, eating family meals, or relaxing with a cup of coffee.

The included chairs are stackable, conserving valuable space when it comes to storage. It seems that some chairs are delivered with uneven legs. Adjustments may be needed to keep the chairs from wobbling. This patio dining set doesn’t include cushions but can easily be customized with your own.

While this is one of the most affordable patio dining sets available, the lifespan falls short of many of its competitors. If you’re looking for a long-term investment, a more expensive set will serve you better.

3. Riverbrook Espresso Brown 5-Piece Steel Outdoor Patio Dining Set

round glass table outdoor dining set

Check Price

  • Seating capacity: 4
  • Materials: Steel and glass
  • Umbrella hole: Yes
  • Upholstery: UV-protected sling fabric

This Hampton Bay Riverbrook set is ideal for outdoor living, entertaining, and beyond. It offers contemporary design at an affordable price point that’s hard to pass up.

The chair upholstery is more streamlined than individual cushions. There’s no need to worry about a strong gust of wind carrying your outdoor decor into the neighbor’s yard (or worse).

Despite the list of benefits, those in rainy climates should look elsewhere. This outdoor dining set is very quick to rust and may leave unsightly stains on your deck or patio. The upholstery also holds onto water extremely well. Some reports claim that the seats remain damp 48 hours after heavy rainfall.

But this dining set will make a great addition to an arid backyard or covered patio.

4. Harbison Rectangular 6 - Person Outdoor Dining Set

wood outdoor dining set

Check Price

  • Seating capacity: 7
  • Materials: Solid wood
  • Umbrella hole: Yes
  • Upholstery: None

This Lark Manor outdoor dining set shines in terms of versatility and style. With solid wood and several seating options, it’s ideal for groups of all sizes.

Thanks to the table’s extendable design, you can choose from a 55 or 79-inch dining area to fit the occasion. The attached leaf folds away when the table isn’t extended. There’s no need to designate a separate storage location.

Along with four standard dining chairs, you’ll receive a bench seat that can accommodate up to three people.

Though the table features a built-in umbrella hole, it’s located in the extension leaf. In other words, there’s no way to place an umbrella in the table when not fully extended.

Since this dining set is made of solid hardwood, a little extra care is needed to keep it looking its best. Still, exposure to the elements will eventually result in wear and tear to the wood’s surface.

5. Crestridge 7-Piece Steel Padded Sling Outdoor Patio Dining Set

outdoor dining set blue chairs

Check Price

  • Seating capacity: 6
  • Materials: Steel and ceramic tile
  • Umbrella hole: Yes
  • Upholstery: Weather-resistant sling fabric

Finding a perfectly sized piece of furniture is often the hardest part of any home design project. For medium-sized households looking to enjoy everything their patio has to offer, this Hampton Bay patio dining set offers plenty of seating and a substantial tabletop without taking up too much room.

While the steel construction provides durability and strength, the table stands out from the crowd with its unique ceramic tile finish. The spring-rocking chairs are comfortable and upholstered with padded sling fabric.

Assembling this patio set isn’t the easiest. But once you pass that hurdle, it’s a wonderful option for a covered porch or patio.

6. Laurel Oaks 7-Piece Brown Steel Outdoor Patio Dining Set

modern outdoor dining set

Check Price

  • Seating capacity: 6
  • Materials: Steel
  • Umbrella hole: Yes
  • Upholstery: Removable cushions

This is another great patio dining set from Hampton Bay for large households (or those who just love to entertain). It’s perfect for a variety of activities, from dining to working from home.

With a classic aesthetic that optimizes style and comfort, there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself spending plenty of time sitting at this outdoor table. Each set includes two swiveling chairs plus four standard dining chairs.

The chairs feature removable cushions that are available in several colors and fabrics. You’ll have no problem finding a colorway that suits your existing patio decor.

One downside of the upholstery is that it is not waterproof. Also, the metal frame of both the table and chairs is prone to rust and peeling.

In terms of quality control, this set sometimes includes uneven chair legs. (An annoying but relatively easy problem to fix.)

7. Devoko 9 Pieces Patio Dining Set

Check Price

  • Seating capacity: 4
  • Materials: Steel and plastic
  • Umbrella hole: No
  • Upholstery: Removable cushions

If storage is a top priority, this patio dining set from Devoko should be at the top of your list. You won’t find this unique nesting design in many other outdoor furniture sets.

This set includes a dining table, four chairs, and four ottomans. The chairs and ottomans all feature matching, removable cushions.

The rattan finish fits equally well in both formal and casual outdoor living spaces. This set is awesome for a relaxed yet functional patio inspired by Bohemian or rustic decor.

As mentioned, the true highlight of this patio dining set is the nesting design. The ottomans fit inside the chairs which in turn fit snugly under the table. The end result is a full-scale dining set that can be easily stowed away when not in use.

If you’re looking for a patio set that accommodates an umbrella, you may want to turn elsewhere. It’s also important to note that the included cushions are a bit too thin for comfort.

Conclusion

Chances are you’re only looking to invest in one patio dining set (if you have an extra-large or multiple backyard living spaces, we stand corrected). While any of these dining sets would be a worthwhile investment, our top pick is the Northridge Rectangular 8 Person 83” Long Dining Set with Cushions.

The Northridge patio table and chairs have everything the average household could want from an outdoor dining set. It boasts a versatile aesthetic and construction that’s built to last. Plus, the large seating capacity, removable cushions, and built-in umbrella slot are hard to pass up.

How To Clean a Concrete Patio https://nextluxury.com/home-design/how-to-clean-a-concrete-patio/ Thu, 23 Dec 2021 22:00:51 +0000 https://nextluxury.com/?p=262836 …]]> Concrete patios are popular for several reasons, namely their durability, affordability, and versatility. But even this low-maintenance material requires occasional cleaning to look its best.

Sticking to an annual cleaning schedule will keep your concrete patio looking great and prevent tough stains from leaving their mark.

Cleaning a large concrete slab can feel intimidating but is surprisingly straightforward. Once you get started, your patio could be looking brand new within a matter of hours!

How to Clean a Concrete Patio

Step 1: Gather Supplies

The basic supplies you’ll need for cleaning a patio include:

  • Garden hose
  • Nylon scrub brush
  • Protective clothing
  • Broom
  • Plastic tarp
  • Sponge mop
  • Bucket
  • Cleaning solution
  • Power washer (optional)

Several different cleaning solutions can be used on concrete. Popular recommendations range from liquid dish soap to professional-strength muriatic acid.

With that said, a 2:1 mixture of distilled white vinegar and baking soda is often all you’ll need to clean a concrete patio by hand.

Step 2: Prep the Space

You can’t jump straight into cleaning a patio without first preparing the space and its surroundings.

Remove all furniture and decor from the area to be cleaned. This is a great time to give your patio furniture a quick wipe-down as well. Cover heavy or otherwise immovable objects (e.g., large planters, fire pits, grills, etc.) with plastic sheeting as needed.

Sweep–or use a leaf blower–to remove all loose dirt, leaves, pebbles, and branches from the patio surface.

Before getting started, don’t forget to take the time to protect the landscaping around your concrete patio.

Temporarily covering delicate plants will protect them from harsh cleaners and power washer damage. It’s also a good idea to cover or remove garden decor near your patio’s perimeter.

Step 3: Apply Cleaning Solution

Combine the vinegar and baking soda in a large bucket. Slowly pour the mixture over the concrete patio, using a sponge mop to spread it over the entire surface.

Allow the cleaning solution to sit for up to 30 minutes for the best results.

Step 4: Scrub

With a nylon-bristled brush, scrub the entire patio to remove build-up and tough stains.

Using a nylon-bristled brush is incredibly important. Metal bristles can scratch the surface of concrete and leave behind unsightly rust stains.

Step 5: Rinse and Dry

Before the cleaning solution has a chance to dry, rinse the entire patio using a garden hose or pressure washer. Always start on the lowest setting when using a pressure washer to prevent damage.

Address any remaining stains as needed.

Do not replace any furniture or decor until the patio is completely dry. Doing so increases the risk of new stains appearing.

When To Clean Your Concrete Patio

pressure washing a concrete patio

Clean your entire concrete patio once per year, and as needed, to prevent a build-up of stains and other small messes. Spring is generally the best time to deep-clean a concrete patio.

Spot cleaning is a great way to keep your patio looking great throughout the season. Clean your patio again in the fall if it collected dirt and grime throughout the summer.

Clean your patio on a temperate day. Avoid cleaning when the sun is too bright as the cleaning solution will evaporate.

Tips To Remove Tough Stains From a Concrete Patio

Rust

Metal objects like grills, fire pits, and furniture can leave behind unsightly rust stains on your concrete patio. Depending on the severity of the staining, scrubbing with a simple cleaning solution may not be enough.

Acid is one of the most effective treatments against rust. Proceed with caution–using diluted treatments and a soft-bristled brush–if your concrete patio is painted.

Start with a household acid like pure lemon juice or white vinegar. Allow the acid to sit on the stain for ten to 15 minutes before scrubbing with a brush. Repeat as needed.

Tough stains will need to be treated with a commercial-strength acid. Oxalic acid is the most popular option. Oxalic acid (and other commercial products) can be applied using the same method as lemon juice or vinegar. However, be sure to wear protective gear and follow all provided safety guidelines.

Always apply these treatments on a clean surface. Excess dirt and debris will only prevent the acid from reaching its intended target.

Grease

The most effective way to remove grease or oil from a concrete patio largely depends on the age of the stain.

Treat new spills by covering the stain with baking soda. The baking soda will absorb much of the grease. Once the baking soda has sat for 30 minutes, scrub the area with liquid dish soap and water to remove the rest of the stain.

While you can try to remove older stains using the above method, many will require the use of strong chemical degreasers. Select a product suitable for use on concrete and be sure to follow the provided safety guidelines.

Mold and Mildew

Mold and mildew can form anywhere moisture is present, including underneath patio furniture and decor. While most of these stains can be handled with a powerful garden hose attachment, some will persist without special treatment.

Using a mixture of warm water and bleach, soak the affected area and let sit. Scrub the concrete’s surface with a stiff-bristled brush, paying close attention to gaps where mold spores may be hiding.

You can also use a commercial mold and mildew remover to cut through persistent stains. Be sure to choose a product formulated for the outdoors.

Moss

While not technically a stain, moss can be a nuisance on any patio that stays consistently dark and cool throughout the day.

Before breaking out any chemicals, try addressing the moss with boiling water and a stiff brush. You can also sprinkle baking soda over your patio—let sit for 24 hours—to kill the moss.

If moss returns, liquid bleach can be applied to the surface to prevent regrowth. This solution typically works for a year.

Stronger chemicals like zinc sulfate monohydrate or ammonium sulfate can be purchased at most garden supply stores. These treatments will prevent moss regrowth for several years after application.

Rest assured, however, that moss growth won’t harm your concrete patio if you choose to leave it be.

How To Enclose a Patio https://nextluxury.com/home-design/how-to-enclose-a-patio/ Thu, 23 Dec 2021 18:00:28 +0000 https://nextluxury.com/?p=263569 …]]> Sitting on the patio is a great way to spend warm summer nights. But what if you could enjoy your outdoor living space even when weather conditions are less than ideal?

Enclosing a patio might sound like a huge undertaking but can be surprisingly simple if you know the right way to get the job done.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or already have the luxury of a covered patio in your backyard, keep reading for the best tips on how to enclose a patio!

5 Types of Temporary and Permanent Patio Enclosures

1. Pop-Up Canopy

Mark Winfrey/Shutterstock

To transform a patio into an enclosed space with zero commitment, a pop-up canopy is by far the best option. This temporary enclosure is a large tent that encompasses the patio slab (or at least the majority of it). Keep in mind that some pop-up canopies are not true enclosures. Instead, their open sides more closely resemble a pergola.

For maximum versatility, look for a pop-up canopy with removable screens or shade panels. With this style, you can customize your patio to fit the weather with a moment’s notice.

2. Gazebo

gazebo-enclosed-patio

While most permanent patio enclosures assume that the slab is connected to a house or other building, constructing a gazebo lets you enclose an outdoor space without an adjacent structure.

Gazebos come in many different styles and sizes. Gazebos themselves can be entirely enclosed, screened-in, or partially open.

3. Three-Season Porch

If a permanent patio enclosure is on the cards, consider investing in a three-season porch.

Three-season porches are basically fully enclosed rooms that lack modern heating or cooling. They offer the chance to extend your patio’s functionality further into the spring and fall (a must if you live somewhere with harsh winters).

Whether you’re starting completely from scratch or your patio is already covered, constructing a three-season porch is no small feat. But it’s almost guaranteed to add value to your home in the future.

4. Four-Season Porch

Looking to add more living space to your home? Then converting your patio into a four-season porch might be the best solution.

In practice, a four-season porch is not much different than any other room in your home. Four-season porches are fully heated and cooled, offering the same amenities as your standard living room or den.

Many homeowners opt to preserve the original atmosphere of their four-season porch by installing floor-to-ceiling windows or retractable walls. These features are totally optional but do make it easier to enjoy the outdoors during the warmer months.

5. Sunroom

sunroom-enclosed-patio

Speaking of maintaining the outdoor qualities of an enclosed patio, a sunroom offers the best of both worlds.

A sunroom is a type of enclosed porch that is equipped with large (often wall-to-wall) windows. Many sunrooms also feature glass ceilings.

As the name implies, the main purpose of a sunroom is to let in as much natural light as possible. This type of room is perfect for raising plants of all varieties when the temperatures drop.

Sunrooms are often described as three or four-season. These terms refer to whether the space is temperature-controlled (four-season) or not (three-season).

How To Enclose a Patio

Adding temporary walls to a covered patio can be done in as little as an afternoon, depending on the exact method you choose. When it comes to constructing a permanent enclosure, a covered patio will often make the project faster and more affordable.

Here’s how to finish enclosing your patio for extra protection against bugs, the elements, and prying neighbors.

1. Curtains

curtains-enclosed-patio
FotoHelin/Shutterstock

When it comes to adding privacy, blocking harsh winds, or deterring insects, curtains are a surprisingly simple solution.

Opaque curtains can be hung from your porch eave or pergola. Be sure to select an outdoor-safe fabric that will not fade or degrade with exposure to sunlight and moisture.

One of the greatest assets of using curtains to enclose a patio is the sheer flexibility. You can tie the curtains back to open up the space and let in a gentle breeze. Or seal them shut with Velcro, magnets, or clasps to keep out even the most persistent pests.

2. Shades

shades-enclosed-patio
Allison J. Hahn/Shutterstock

Similar to curtains, shades are extremely effective against the sun, wind, and nosy neighbors. Be sure to invest in shades that can be left outdoors.

Simply pull down the shades when you need a layer of insulation between you and the elements. Folding or roll-up shades can just as easily be retracted when you’re ready to enjoy the great outdoors once again.

If your patio is covered by a pergola, canvas shades can also be mounted to the ceiling for a bit of overhead protection. While this won’t provide the same shelter as a permanent roof, it’s a great temporary solution on particularly hot and sunny days.

3. Screens

screens-enclosed-patio
Chad Robertson Media/Shutterstock

Are mosquitos and other biting insects the bane of your existence? Then screens will be much more effective than curtains or shades. When it comes to installing screens around a covered patio, there are two basic options to choose from.

The first is essentially a set of curtains made of screens. These often feature strong magnets to keep them closed when people are not coming in or out. The greatest part is that they can be installed without any real construction.

Or you can opt for a more permanent solution by enclosing your patio with screen windows. This option is more costly and typically requires the help of a professional. But you’ll be left with a well-protected patio that looks great year-round.

4. Glass

glass-enclosed-patio
Ludmila Stankevich/Shutterstock

Screens don’t offer adequate protection from rain, wind, or snow in many climates. The next step up would be investing in glass windows for your patio enclosure.

The best thing is that you don’t need to choose between permanent screens or glass. Adding screens to existing patio enclosure windows is very straightforward. So you can still enjoy the openness of a traditional patio when the weather permits.

Again, installing glass windows around a patio is a big project. Supporting walls may be needed before you can even think about the windows themselves. But the final product will be 100% worth it.

Is Constructing a Permanent Patio Enclosure Worth It?

Permanent-closure-enclosed-patio
Ground Picture/Shutterstock

That depends. But in most cases, the answer is yes!

An enclosed patio lets you use your outdoor living space more often and for a greater part of the year. For many homeowners, this added value is more than enough justification for constructing a patio enclosure.

Even if your days in your current home are numbered, there may be a reason to invest in a gazebo or sunroom. It could increase your home’s future resale value.

Homes with quality outdoor living spaces are generally more desirable than their counterparts. Adding an enclosed patio to your home could—in the right market—help your home sell faster and for a higher amount!

Of course, building an enclosed patio costs money in and of itself. So while you’re unlikely to lose a significant amount on this investment, don’t expect to earn a profit either.

1. Boho Chic Patio Decor Ideas

Bohemian decor is the perfect way to infuse your outdoor living space with a casual and inviting atmosphere.

In terms of furniture and decor, this aesthetic is much more forgiving than other popular styles! It’s okay for Bohemian decor to be a bit rough around the edges—that’s what gives it so much inherent charm.

While you might have a picture in your head of what boho-inspired design entails, this trend can be incredibly diverse. You should have no trouble catering to the specific needs (and vibes) of your patio space.

2. Fire Pit Retreats

Every living space needs a central gathering point. Adding a fire pit to your backyard or patio is a wonderful way to create a functional centerpiece.

You don’t need a ton of space to accommodate a fire pit on your patio. There are countless self-contained fire pits that require little more than a few square feet to operate safely!

Even more important than the fire pit itself is the space around it. Take full advantage of the fire’s natural heat and light by arranging comfortable seating around the perimeter.

3. Elegant Flagstone Accents

Flagstone, rock split along natural bedding layers, can bring a charming touch to any paver patio or walkway. You can even use this unique material to construct retaining walls and other hardscape elements.

Anyone looking for a softer aesthetic for their patio slab will much prefer the appearance of flagstone over perfectly cut paver stones. If authentic flagstone isn’t in the budget, don’t worry. You can recreate this look more affordably using poured concrete and a special stencil!

4. Garden-Inspired Patio

Few things are more aesthetically pleasing than a well-tended garden (even if your approach is a low-maintenance one). So, green thumb or not, consider blending the border between your backyard patio and garden.

Bring the look of colorful flowers and lush greenery into your patio design with planters and hanging baskets. Flowering shrubs, annuals, and even vegetable plants can be placed around the perimeter of an outdoor patio for privacy, shade, aroma, and—of course—natural beauty.

5. Landscape Elegance

For the most stylish and functional patio possible, you really need to look at the big picture—aka your entire backyard.

Landscaping encompasses nearly every facet of outdoor design. While homeowners often focus their landscaping efforts on trees and shrubbery, elements like fencing, pergolas, gazebos, walkways, and water features are equally as important.

As far as the relationship between your patio and landscaping is concerned, pay close attention to the transition of the two. An effective transition will ensure your patio feels like part of the landscaping rather than an awkward offshoot.

6. Outdoor Lighting Magic

Relying solely on the sun to light your patio or pavilion is a good way to guarantee you spend as little time outside as possible! Fortunately, lighting an outdoor space is more straightforward than many realize.

String lights are a simple, versatile solution for overhead lighting that is neither difficult nor expensive to install. Invest in solar-powered lights if no outlets are within reach.

Space individual lanterns along the perimeter of your patio or on furniture surfaces for accent and task lighting.

7. Sleek and Stylish Modern Patios

Many homeowners find themselves drawn to modern design. And this aesthetic is just as effective outdoors as it is within the home!

Follow the same principles when selecting patio furniture and decor as you would for any interior space. In short, your patio design should include minimal clutter, lots of contrast, and an emphasis on function.

Plants can soften the edges of a modern-inspired patio without interfering with the intended vibe. Opt for heavily structured shrubs and flowers to frame your patio slab.

8. Maximizing Narrow Outdoor Spaces

Assuming everyone has access to an acre or more for an outdoor living space is guaranteed to leave many renters and homeowners high and dry. This is especially true for anyone living in a city or densely populated suburb.

The good news is that a vast backyard is a luxury but definitely not a necessity! You can create a cozy, practical, and all-around awesome patio within a very narrow space.

Whether you’re working with a ground-level patio or a raised balcony, focus on decor that occupies vertical space rather than valuable floor space. Folding patio furniture is a great investment.

9. Creating Privacy Outdoors

If your dream patio resembles an outdoor oasis, the ability to lock eyes with your nosy neighbors probably isn’t at the top of your must-have list!

A privacy fence is the most obvious solution to this common problem. Even if constructing a fence around your entire property isn’t feasible, erecting a privacy barrier along the edge of your patio could make a world of difference.

For a softer look, consider planting dense shrubs or dwarf trees to block your view of the street or neighboring yard. Train climbing vines up a trellis for a multi-faceted privacy screen.

10. Succulent Paradise

Succulents—a family of desert-dwelling plants that includes cacti—have stolen the hearts of gardeners around the globe.

While succulents make great houseplants, they are equally at home in outdoor planters and garden beds. Succulents of all kinds thrive in most climates throughout the summer. Select native species of succulents for a lower-maintenance solution.

Given their natural habitat, succulents go hand-in-hand with decor styles like Mediterranean and American Western. Keep this in mind when planning out the rest of your patio design!

11. Patio Oasis With a Pool

Does your backyard patio double as a swimming pool deck? There’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the benefits of both outdoor living spaces in a single design.

The swimming pool is the centerpiece of your patio—there’s no arguing that. Draw even more attention to it by installing integrated lighting or placing planters around the perimeter.

Be sure to select furniture and decor that play well with chlorine. Lay down pathways between the pool and other key areas to keep everything nice and clean.

12. Dining Al Fresco With Tables and Chairs

As with any living space, your patio furniture should be chosen with a clear purpose in mind. For most households, a basic set including a table and chairs is the best starting point for a patio design.

With an outdoor table and chairs, you can dine, work, and relax on your patio with minimal fuss. If shade is a concern, opt for a table with a built-in umbrella.

Once your table and chairs are set up, you can expand your outdoor living space with a sofa, a daybed, chaise loungers, and other cozy seating options.

13. Inviting Walkway Designs

A patio isn’t complete without an equally stylish walkway. Whether your backyard walkway is two or dozens of feet long, think of it as a runway leading up to the main attraction.

A matching walkway is an easy choice, especially if your patio slab features unique stone pavers or embossed designs. But don’t be afraid to pair your patio with a contrasting walkway if it creates the desired effect!

Pay attention to the details. Seemingly little additions like automatic border lighting will be a godsend for both you and guests when it comes to actually using the walkway.

Patio Decor FAQs

What are some budget-friendly patio decor designs?

When decorating your patio on a budget, consider DIY projects such as creating your own outdoor cushions and pillows, repurposing old furniture with a fresh coat of paint, or shopping for secondhand patio pieces at thrift stores or online marketplaces. Incorporating potted plants, affordable outdoor rugs, and string lights can also add charm to your space without breaking the bank.

How can I add a touch of luxury to my patio decor?

To infuse luxury into your patio, invest in high-quality outdoor furniture with plush cushions and durable materials. Consider adding a fire pit or outdoor fireplace for ambiance. Install elegant lighting fixtures like chandeliers or pendant lights, and use premium outdoor fabrics for cushions and drapes. Don’t forget to accessorize with decorative elements like outdoor rugs and high-end tableware.

What is the best way to create privacy on my patio without compromising aesthetics?

To achieve privacy without sacrificing style, consider using outdoor curtains or bamboo screens that can be easily rolled up when not needed. Tall, lush potted plants like bamboo or tall grasses can also create a natural and visually appealing barrier. Incorporating decorative lattice panels or trellises with climbing plants is another attractive option.

68 Deck Color Ideas https://nextluxury.com/home-design/deck-color-ideas/ Sat, 24 Apr 2021 13:51:34 +0000 https://nextluxury.com/?p=227231 …]]> Whether you live in the city or the suburbs, in the country or by the shore, a deck is a welcome place to bask in the sun. To create your dream deck, you must choose a deck color that complements your home’s exterior. Decking color options are more varied than ever, so deciding might be difficult.

Let your home and deck design lead you in selecting a deck paint or stain color scheme. Modern homes can carry a dark paint color–even black–on the deck, while a coastal home might need a lighter color and a natural wood tone.

Take a look at our best deck color ideas before settling on the perfect hue for your deck.

1. Elegant Shades of Gray in Deck Color Ideas

Once considered dull and uninspiring, gray has enjoyed a resurgence as a goes-with-everything neutral color. Gray wood stains or deck paint add character to a wood deck.

Gray comes in a huge range of warm and cool shades, from pale stone to deep charcoal. Any of these hues work especially well on a white home with black trim, as gray serves as a bridge between these extremes.

Gray is a calming neutral canvas behind pops of bright color. Composite decking is a durable, low-maintenance deck floor material that comes in a wide range of gray hues. Purchasing a Trex deck or other gray composite deck eliminates the need for paint or stain. While it’s a higher expense initially, not having to refinish the deck stain color every few years saves money over the long term.

2. Captivating Slate

Natural slate is a cool, dark-colored stone that can be used for a deck floor. Slate gray is also a popular color for wood stain and concrete decks. Many people who love this shade of gray choose paint or tinted concrete because real slate can be slippery when wet, making it a less-than-ideal decking surface.

Slate-colored tiles make a great deck surface since they mimic the real thing but can be found with slip-resistant finishes. Dark slate gray is one of the best deck stain color ideas for a modern home’s wooden deck. Pair it with black balusters and rails for a sleek, contemporary vibe.

3. Enhancing Your Deck’s Beauty with Stains

Deck stain not only provides the color you want, but it also protects your investment from the elements. The type of deck stain you choose determines how much of the wood’s natural characteristics shine through. For example:

  • Solid stain: Covers most of the wood’s color and grain, much like paint. Choose solid deck stain if your deck color ideas are based on achieving a dark, uniform appearance.
  • Semitransparent stain: Provides UV protection and weatherproofing while allowing the wood’s natural characteristics to shine through. Use this when your deck ideas include purchasing a good-quality type of wood.
  • Clear wood preserves: If you’re planning a natural wood deck makeover with redwood, cedar, or another beautiful wood, this clear finish will showcase its beauty. These clear stain products provide weatherproofing and UV protection but allow the wood’s characteristics to be the focus of your porch, patio, or pool deck.

Each type of deck stain comes in a range of tints and hues. Most are in the brown, tan, gray, or redwood color families.

4. Embrace the Warmth of Tan

Tan ranges from the palest, coolest khaki to deep shades of honey and maple. Tan is a popular stain color for decks because it goes with virtually any home exterior color scheme.

Nearly every natural shade of wood falls into the tan spectrum, making tan deck stains the best at honoring the material’s natural characteristics. Tans and browns are also excellent choices in desert environments, where their hues coordinate well with the surrounding landscape.

Natural stone or brick pavers are the other great choices if you prefer tan deck surfaces. Light brown, beige tiles or stone are ideal around a fire pit, or for creating a path leading to a garden pergola.

Tint a concrete pool deck with a sandy shade of tan to highlight the water’s blue brilliance on a sunny day. A warm, reddish tan pool deck paint looks stunning below redwood porch furniture.

5. Exploring Two-Tone Deck Color Combinations

If you can’t narrow your deck color ideas down to one, there are plenty of ways to use two or more colors in your deck design.

Pair warm brown balusters and deck boards with glossy black handrails and columns. Dark deck and step surfaces make white posts and handrails pop. Some deck designs incorporate three or more colors, such as gray, maple, and black.

For a long-lasting two-tone deck, choose gray composite decking in a dark slate and a slightly lighter shade of gray.

Professional deck builders can offer a variety of layout ideas, such as using a dark border around a lighter main deck. Deck boards can also be arranged in a herringbone or pattern that showcases two hues within the same color family.

6. Timeless and Serene

While an all-white deck may be harder to keep clean than other colors, sometimes it’s the best choice.

Coastal homes and Victorian porches often look best with white decking color, white rails, and white trim. A white deck serves a practical purpose in hot climates, as it reflects rather than absorbs heat from the intense midday sun.

A white deck can also be a great choice for a modern home, especially if the home’s exterior is predominantly white.

A white tile deck with metal handrails is the epitome of minimalist, sleek perfection. Regardless of your home’s style, white is the quintessential blank canvas that allows your furniture, flowers, and artwork to be your deck‘s focal points.

7. Embracing Nature

If you want your deck or patio to blend into the natural surroundings, you can’t go wrong with natural wood finishes.

Although the look of bare wood is appealing, you must use some type of stain or finish to weatherproof the surface. Semitransparent stains are a great way to add a hint of color to the deck without hiding a beautiful wood grain.

Take home several color samples to see which wood stain color works best with your landscape.

A warm maple shade may feel appealing in the store, but when you see it in your natural lighting, a cooler ash shade might be the perfect hue. Consider using two shades of wood stain to add depth and interest to your deck design.

1. Enhance Your Backyard With These Patio Enclosure Ideas

A patio enclosure overlooking the backyard helps build a connection between your home’s indoor and outdoor spaces. If possible, include a direct doorway between the backyard and the rest of the house.

Large windows or screens ensure your enclosed patio feels like a sheltered outdoor space rather than just another room. Screens will allow you to open up the patio when the weather is nice. Install blinds or shutters inside your enclosure’s windows for added privacy and light control.

Consider going with a glass roof or skylights for a bright greenhouse feel. Supplement the natural sunlight with artificial lighting, especially if the enclosure has a full ceiling. Finally, fill the enclosed space with outdoor furniture and garden containers.

2. Embrace Versatility With Freestanding Solutions

Building a freestanding patio enclosure can be a bit more involved than adding an extension onto your home’s exterior. Pergolas are a great option to start with. Add a full ceiling to your standard pergola for better shelter.

A semi-enclosed pergola is perfect for protecting guests and belongings from the elements. Go with an oversized cabana for a comfortable outdoor space that’s extremely versatile. Sliding screens or heavy curtains are useful for privacy or for a little more protection from harsh winds and rain.

Upgrade your covered patio with wired lighting or even a ceiling fan. These overhead fixtures will maximize the space’s usability during all hours of the day (and seasons).

3. Exploring Glass Designs

If you’re looking to get as much natural sunlight in your patio enclosure as possible, a glass structure is definitely the way to go. These enclosures can be just as beautiful during a rain or snowstorm—temperature permitting, of course.

Many glass patio enclosures are designed with optional screen panels to let in fresh air. You can also find some design plans that slide open completely for an outdoor space that converts to your exact needs.

You can utilize glass construction in both freestanding and add-on patio enclosures. (The latter are typically cheaper and can conserve valuable acreage in a small yard.) Either way, they’re a great way to shelter your patio without losing the natural view.

4. Sleek and Functional Modern Ideas

To bring a dose of modern design to your patio enclosure, stick with clean lines and a simple color palette. Black and white offer a lovely contrast. Use touches of greenery, wood grain, and poured concrete to make the space feel warm and inviting.

Pergola-style enclosures pair nicely with modern patio furniture and landscaping. Fill the space with sleek geometric furniture and decor.

The sun won’t stay in the sky all day, so get creative with your outdoor lighting. Pendant and globe string lights hung from the enclosure ceiling are great options. Or invest in recessed lighting throughout your patio design.

5. Bringing the Outdoors In

For a living space that blends the best of indoor and outdoor design, focus on comfort and functionality. Prioritize lighting, heating, and cooling elements inside your patio enclosure. Adding some type of insulation to your enclosure walls will help control the temperature inside.

Take a page from your living room furniture when choosing items to outfit your patio enclosure. You can even use indoor furniture in your design. Just make sure the space is fully covered and doesn’t get too much direct sunlight.

Hang curtains or blinds for optional privacy. These will also let you dim the enclosure if you want to enjoy a daytime movie or relax with some yoga.

6. Poolside Retreats

Building a patio screen enclosure over an in-ground pool can help keep the water clean and prevent people and animals from accidentally falling in. It’s possible to design an enclosure that only covers the swimming pool.

But you’ll probably want it to be large enough to accommodate a lounging deck with some patio furniture, as well.

Invest in UV glass windows for extra sun protection. Or include a shade sail or remember to leave enough room for a patio umbrella inside your pool enclosure.

Grow ornamental plants inside to emphasize the space’s connection to the outdoors and freshen the air. Depending on your enclosure’s design, you might be able to install garden beds directly into the ground.

7. A Blend of Comfort and Charm

There are so many great options available when it comes to creating a porch enclosure. If you live somewhere warm, converting your deck or balcony into a screened porch is an excellent way to enjoy being outside without annoying insects.

If the porch is already covered by a roof, finish the job by building permanent walls or installing floor-to-ceiling screens or curtains. Use a glass enclosure if you want weather protection that doesn’t involve sacrificing that outdoorsy feel.

Remember that your porch enclosure won’t offer the same degree of climate control as the rest of your home. Add a ceiling fan and a heating element to extend the seasonality of your enclosed porch.

8. Privacy Meets Open-Air Living

Enclosing an existing patio is often less about keeping out Mother Nature and more about keeping out the prying eyes of your neighbors.

Privacy fencing is a simple solution for any size of outdoor patio. Use bamboo screens for a semi-permanent option that still looks stylish. Install a trellis with or without climbing vines for even more aesthetically pleasing privacy.

Boosting your patio’s privacy isn’t always about the neighbors. Sometimes, you just want to be alone. Hang curtains or roll-up blinds from the sides of your pergola or cabana to create a private getaway separate from the rest of your home.

9. Enjoy Nature Without the Bugs

If you live somewhere with a mild climate, a fully enclosed patio may be more than you want or need. Even on their own, screens offer plenty of protection against bugs and less-than-ideal weather.

Many homeowners choose screens for their patio enclosure because they let in fresh air around the clock. They can be installed alone or paired with glass windows for greater insulation. Semi-opaque screens even provide some privacy and a certain degree of protection from the sun.

You can also use screens for your enclosure ceiling, but keep in mind that this will increase your patio’s exposure to the elements (namely, rain).

10. Sliding Door Patio Designs

For a patio cover that offers the most versatility possible, go with a sliding design. Such designs range from movable door and wall panels to an entire frame that slides open.

With sliding enclosure elements, you can transform your patio from a regular room to an outdoor room in a matter of moments.

Keep it simple with a single sliding door or design an enclosure with whole walls that are “optional.” You can enjoy all of the benefits of a glass-enclosed patio or porch without any of the sacrifices.

11. Bask in Natural Light and Comfort

No living space truly bridges the gap between indoors and outdoors like a sunroom or lanai. While a sunroom is technically an interior room, it offers many of the same benefits as a regular enclosed patio.

Sunrooms are safer to fill with indoor-only furniture, decor, and household electronics than enclosed patios or porches. When choosing sunroom decor, treat the space like a second living room or home office.

The sheer number of windows can make it hard to keep a glass sunroom comfortable year-round. But you can still use the space for most of the year. If your sunroom has a glass ceiling, invest in remote-controlled blinds so you can customize the space to your needs at any moment.

25 Patio Awning Ideas https://nextluxury.com/home-design/patio-awning-ideas/ Tue, 02 Mar 2021 09:00:54 +0000 https://nextluxury.com/?p=214475 …]]> A great patio awning can turn a scorching hot outdoor space into a cool, comfortable retreat. Enjoying your patio or deck all day requires some type of patio cover to shield you from the sun’s intense rays. If your outdoor space doesn’t have a built-in covering, you have many shade idea options to choose from. A classic patio shade is one of the most popular patio awning ideas.

An awning is a sheet of canvas or another type of shade cloth stretched on a fiberglass, metal, or aluminum frame. Not only will a patio awning protect you from the sun, but it will also protect your outdoor furniture from rain, hail, and other natural elements.

Check out our favorite patio awning ideas and learn more about which type of patio cover will work best for you.

1. Enhance Your Backyard With These Patio Awning Ideas

Some homes have a canopy awning over each window, in both the front yard and the backyard. This type of canopy is usually a design element, common on older bungalows and cottage-style homes. However, it’s most common to see window and door awnings in the backyard.

A patio awning is most likely a backyard element, as a patio usually opens out into the outdoor space behind the house. If your patio, deck, terrace, or other outdoor living space is uncovered, you can install a retractable patio awning. For a more permanent backyard awning, build a permanent frame to support your awning fabric.

2. Stylish Canopy Options for Your Outdoor Space

It’s common to interchange the words “awning” and “canopy” but the two sources of outdoor shade actually have some differences. While both are often made of a durable, waterproof material, an awning is thought to be more permanent. Stationary awnings prevent light from entering inside windows and doors and protect an outdoor area from the elements.

On the other hand, a canopy may be a completely freestanding source of shade. In that regard, a patio umbrella is a type of retractable canopy because it can be moved around your outdoor space as needed. A patio canopy isn’t a substitute for a permanent patio awning, but it’s great for extending an awning’s shaded area.

In snowy, icy climates a canopy or retractable awning is preferred over a permanent metal awning structure. This is because harsh winter weather can easily damage simple porch awnings. It’s better to have a patio cover that can be stored away along with your patio furniture at the end of summer.

3. Transforming Your Outdoor Living Area

While a patio is usually a ground-level slab of concrete, a deck is an outdoor living area that’s raised above the ground. A deck needs a source of shade if it is used often. Because it is usually made of wood or a composite material, it is common to build a wood, composite, or metal awning frame that permanently attaches to the deck. This structure supports an awning made from fabric, durable plastic, or wood.

A small deck can benefit from a simple manual retractable awning attached to the side of your home. If you prefer a temporary way to shade the deck, purchase an inexpensive shade sail that can be put up and taken down daily. If you need a larger area of shade, get a pop-up pergola to shade your deck during events without the commitment or expense of building a full awning structure.

4. Crafting DIY Comfort

If you rent your home and aren’t allowed to make any structural changes to your patio or deck, you’ll have to get creative with DIY patio awning ideas. One of the best options for a DIY patio cover is a pop-up canopy, such as the ones you see at arts and crafts festivals or campgrounds.

These portable structures should be taken down at the end of the day. But they are a handy way to obtain sun protection without building a shade structure.

If you have above-average DIY skills, consider building your own aluminum pergola. A lattice patio cover kit is easy to find online, and you must follow the directions for the exact kit you purchase.

5. Awnings for All-Season Enjoyment

If you spend a great deal of time in your garden or simply enjoy outdoor living, an awning is necessary to provide shade on sunny days. If you have an outdoor kitchen or an outdoor living room, you will undoubtedly need an adequate patio cover to protect your investment.

Today’s modern garden awnings aren’t the classic striped canvas structures from years gone by—although those awnings still look great on some traditional-style homes. Covers for your outdoor living areas come in a range of solid fabrics in natural shades that blend into the landscape.

When choosing a color for your awning material, remember that darker colors trap heat while lighter colors tend to show dirt and stains more easily. Therefore, a medium shade is best, or choose a printed fabric that can hide dirt well.

6. Pergola Awning Combinations

A pergola is a freestanding structure built outdoors from columns or beams supporting a roof. The roof is sometimes left open in a beam or grid pattern. Other times, it is covered in awning material that may be retractable. Sometimes, the roof is solid to provide the best protection against the elements.

A beautiful pergola cover can grow over time when vines or trailing plants are allowed to grow over an open grid roof. Pergola roofs are usually flat, unlike the arched or curved roof on a classic garden gazebo. A flat roof makes it easier to DIY a pergola awning solution yourself.

7. Exploring Retractable Awning Solutions

Retractable patio awnings are the most popular type of awning used in the United States today. Motorized awnings allow you to cover your patio when you want shade and retract the cover when you want an open living space. A manual retractable awning may be fine if you have a small patio, balcony, or terrace. This type of awning can be extended and retracted by hand.

A motorized retractable awning is preferable if you have a large deck or patio. Operated by a simple switch or remote control, these types of awnings are more expensive than stationary or manual retractable awnings. However, most homeowners find them well worth the investment.

8. Expanding Your Space With Roof Extensions

Sometimes the simplest way to get a solid patio awning is to hire a builder to extend your roof over your porch, patio, or terrace. The most stable of all awning ideas, these roof extension awnings can be made to look as though they were always a part of the original structure.

A roof extension patio awning is a great place to add a creative design element to your home. Cover it with tin or copper sheeting and use decorative wrought iron supports. If you decide to use a metal roofing material on your patio awning, make sure it is well insulated. If not, bare metal baking in hot sunlight can create an oven-like effect for those sitting beneath it.

9. Wood Awnings for Patio Elegance

Classic wood patio awnings look inviting behind almost any style of home. Keep the wood structure simple on a modern home or go crazy with gingerbread and other embellishments on a Victorian or traditional style house. A wood patio awning is easy to paint yourself and change the look of your patio every few years.

A basic wood patio awning is the perfect cover for a casually styled backyard. Hang light strings from the beams and enjoy an open, airy space on warm evenings. Plexiglass panels provide rain protection but allow the sun to shine in through an open wood grid awning.

10. Gazing Through Glass

A glass or glass-like plastic patio awning is a good choice if you wish to create a covered patio that feels more like a sunroom than a backyard patio. Glass panels come in clear or opaque finishes to provide different levels of sun protection. A certain type of pergola kit has retractable patio doors enabling you to control how open or closed you wish your outdoor space to be.

Glass patio awnings are good in climates with a lot of rainy weather. Simply close the glass panel doors and you create a solid gazebo type of structure that enables you to stay dry while enjoying the outdoors. A glass-top awning is also a good type of cover for an apartment or condo balcony. The simple lines of a metal and glass gazebo are the perfect garden accent on a modern, minimalist, or contemporary home.

Patio Awning FAQs

What can I use for shade on my patio?

Many patio cover options are available. You can install an awning or use a pop-up canopy for shade. Planting shade trees or shrubs is a green solution to the sunshade problem. Building a pergola or gazebo is a permanent, attractive way to shade your patio.

What type of awning is best?

Although only you can decide the best type of patio awning for your home, the retractable awning remains the most popular type. Homeowners love the flexibility of having deck awnings when needed, and the ability to hide them away when they no longer need protection from harmful UV rays.

How much does it cost to build a patio awning?

The cost of a patio awning will vary by type, size, and location. The average cost of installing an awning is around $2,500. Homeowners report spending between $1,200 and $3,700 after installation. If you can DIY the installation, expect to spend anywhere from $200 to $3,500 for the canopy itself.

73 Deck Privacy Ideas https://nextluxury.com/home-design/deck-privacy-ideas/ Sun, 28 Feb 2021 09:00:22 +0000 https://nextluxury.com/?p=225519 …]]> You have a beautiful backyard, and you’d love to spend time soaking in the hot tub or relaxing with friends around your fire pit. But how can you fully enjoy your outdoor living space with your neighbors’ prying eyes constantly peering over onto your property?

There’s truth in the saying; “Good fences make good neighbors.” You could build a fence around your entire property, but that could get expensive. Instead, consider building smaller privacy screens in the areas where you need the most privacy. These deck privacy ideas will help you enjoy your backyard deck in peace.

1. Creating Privacy in Your Backyard

You have a right to enjoy backyard privacy while on your property. Use your green thumb to grow lush greenery. You could have a lovely English garden, tropical oasis, or desert scape. If caring for plants doesn’t sound like you, but you like the idea of greenery, then try building a living wall on an outdoor privacy screen.

Buy privacy screens that have a planter box for the base and a lattice-style screen for the wall. You can then plant flowers in the planter and hang potted plants on the lattice. Vining plants are also a good option; they’ll grow upward from the planter and make their way throughout the lattice.

2. Incorporating Benches for Privacy and Comfort

Small decks and patios have limited space for full-sized outdoor furniture. This can make it difficult to create a welcoming and comfortable space. Build a privacy screen and then build a bench directly into the screen’s structure. This is an easy DIY project when you use pre-made lattice screens. It could be a vinyl lattice for a low-maintenance option or use wood lattice for a more affordable installation option.

A wood bench and privacy wall won’t be comfortable on their own. Make the bench seat slightly deeper to give people space to lounge back. Then pile outdoor throw pillows and lay a seat bench cushion down and you’re good to go.

3. Stylish Fence Deck Privacy Ideas

The traditional method for creating privacy is to build a privacy fence. These are more intense than a standard chain link fence. Chain link fences may keep people off your property, but they do nothing for blocking their line of sight.

Build your backyard fence around the perimeter of your property for the most privacy. Use solid wooden posts to support your new fence. Then you can build an all-wood fence or one made from PVC. A simple plank board will serve the purpose. However, you can make your fence decorative with a lattice or other decorative tops to the fence.

4. Exploring the Use of Metal

Create a modern and decorative look with your deck makeover by using decorative panels. For durability, wrought iron will last for years. You’ll find a wide variety of designs created on the screens. The panels also come in a range of sizes so it doesn’t matter how large or small your deck area is.

To install your metal screens, you’ll either choose an independent screen that comes with a base or mount them in a wooden frame. Smaller panels look beautiful as a decorative top to a wooden fence. You can also alternate wood and metal panels throughout the fence wall.

5. Cozy and Inviting Patio Solutions

Similar to a deck privacy screen, you can use lattice panels or trellis to create a patio privacy wall. Instead of trying to enclose your entire patio, get inspired by backyard privacy ideas that only use a small wall where privacy is needed most. These walls are not a fence. Instead, they’re similar to your interior room’s wall height.

You can use this exterior “wall” to frame your outdoor space and create a focal point. Place your outdoor dining table, sofa, or hot tub in front of it. Then hang string lights or planters from the wall.

6. Enchanting Pergola Designs

Adding a pergola to your back patio or deck can create privacy and sun protection. The side and the overhead structure help to make your backyard deck feel more like another room in your home. When choosing the material and style of your pergola, consider your deck design. You’ll want your deck ideas to blend together for a complementary look.

Once your pergola is up, you can use hanging baskets to create a natural wall. Choose plants that flower for a colorful display. You could also have planter stands around the outside of your patio. These two working together will create a visual wall while also allowing for airflow.

7. Poolside Privacy Options

Add a privacy screen around your pool to help aid with the atmosphere you want to create. Start by building your wood pool deck to your desired size. You could even replace the wood with composite decking for a lower maintenance upgrade. Then use plants to create a natural wall around your pool.

For a tropical feel, you could use a bamboo screen or actual bamboo. It grows fast and tall, making for a quick solution to your privacy issues. Boxwood bushes are dense and perfect for a more formal pool area. You can trim them into a perfect wall shape as well.

8. Creating a Private Retreat

If you have a small porch attached to your home, it’s still nice to have privacy while using this outdoor space. If you have a railing, you can use this to your advantage by hanging planter boxes on it with either vining plants that fill in the railing or tall flowering blooms that act as privacy plants.

Another option is to use potted plants. Place them on the porch in the corners or along the outer edge just inside of the railing. Then let the plant grow tall and leaf to block people from viewing you.

9. Utilizing Screens

Living in an apartment or condo presents a unique challenge. You have limited access and enjoyment of the sun. An outdoor fabric deck privacy screen lets you move it around. This is useful when you want to adjust your level of privacy or use it to block harsh sun rays.

Look for a stand-alone screen with slats. Then you could have it do double duty. Plan to leave it in place and hook small planters from it. This enables you to create your own living wall where you harvest fresh herbs. This proves you don’t need a yard to have a garden.
